Why am I doing this?

I think that my project reflects more about my long term use of computers and technology in my youth that primed me to head in a technological path with my art. Being born in that 70's I was part of the first generation that had silicon chips in domestic life. I had a family that had a computer for the household and our first computer was an Amiga 500, these computers had a focus on awesome midi sound and more colours than previous editions. My younger brothers tended to hog time on it but they had an earlier bedtime than me so I could use it all night. When I shifted out of home I purchased my very own Amiga 500 which sadly I no longer own (my brother still has many Amiga's). I started to play around with PC format as Windows 95 arrived on the scene and began to work out how to diagnose and repair faults on computers. Before long I was begin called by friends and family to fix faults on there machines. I seem to remember how to fix fix lots of peculiar faults from Pentium based chips up. When I was in my 20's I attended SIT to study Certificate In Computing so as to have a qualification and make use of my talents, I never completed this course as my brother inlaw had a owner of a computer repair business wanting someone to help expand. After a quick test of my skills he was happy to offer a job at Online Computers. I worked in a retail and technician capacity, we sold HP computers to small to medium sized businesses and offered support. The real world experience paid off as computer skills are just as relevant in any era. I continued to work at Online for a number of years and helped a friend of mine get a job there too (He still works there). I then worked for myself and did so for a few years, the pressure of operating a small business and having a young family proved problematic and shortly after my marriage ended. I shied away from computers for roughly ten years and only had cast off parts from my friends upgrades as my computer. I had a job at Area 51 which was my dream job, we sold comics, card games, warhammer, pop culture stuff. It was a great job but as the rise of Mighty Ape transpired brick and mortar stores were forced to close. I spent a year and a half unemployed and didn't claim the benefit, I sold many of my Magic the Gathering cards and managed to make a reason amount of money. I decided to enroll at SIT again this time I chose to do a Foundation in Art and Craft course. This was really fun and I think it awoken me to the way the art world thinks. It was that good that I enrolled for the Bachelor in Visual Art degree, getting to use a variety of mediums in the first year was great. I discovered the joy of photography and digital drawing. I'm a bit of a pop culture and music nerd so Photoshop really has been amazing, making Monty Python type animations and Punk rock type of posters all in a digital system.
I have been doing an internship at SIT Downtown as a technician and did a massive reimaging of at least One Hundred and Sixty computers at the campus. This was quite an easy transition to the current computing environment of creative industries, there have been so many different ways to licence software due to extensive amount of small pipeline applications used by the animators. My own computer is an ex SIT Z620 and has had a few upgrades in the form of a SSD and an RTX2070 graphics card. I have a Cintiq 16" and a 27" monitor on cool arms that move through many heights and angles. I have the usual creative type of peripherals like a Blue microphone and a 1080 web cam. So I find that I can create most of what I like on the workstation from a graphical perspective and the Adobe suite. I own a DSLR camera and a Action cam for more portable image capture. I guess this a summary of my computing history and now I shall ramble on about my collecting.

My earliest memory of collecting something was when I was 8 and went to a school fair and bought a stack of 2000ad comics(I still have these). When I was in high school I got an after school job that funded the purchase of weekly 2000ad comics and vinyl records of my favourite bands(I have a fairly extensive The Cure vinyl collection). My Uncles used to collection Marvel comics and Science Fiction videos and magazines and subjected me to much of it.

Overview of My Practice - Presentation

Pretty happy with the way my presentation went, surprisingly useful questions were asked and I was...
