Introduction - Research Mapping

Introduction /20 – Two paragraphs approx

• Title is clear and relevant to project.

Retracing a  my misremembered Invercargill inner city utilizing computer vision.

• Proposed key question is resolved and explained.

Can I use Computer Vision specifically Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) to create photo-realistic representations of a misremembered Invercargill inner city from a collection of my photographs taken in early 2019?

• Definition of proposed key terms (summary only) associated with questioning have been refined and relevance to questioning is explained.

Computer Vision,"Computer vision is a field of study focused on the problem of helping computers to see." Brownlee, J. (2019, March 25). A Gentle Introduction to Computer Vision - Machine Learning Mastery. Retrieved from https://machinelearningmastery.com/what-is-computer-vision/
Computer vision is where a machine is able to 'see' visual elements in a given image, such as light, colour, shape and any distinguishing features

Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN), "GAN is a deep learning, unsupervised machine learning technique proposed by Ian Goodfellow and few other researchers including Yoshua Bengio in 2014." Khandelwal, R. (2018, December 19). Deep Learning — Generative Adversarial Network(GAN) - Medium. Retrieved from https://medium.com/datadriveninvestor/deep-learning-generative-adversarial-network-gan-34abb43c0644
GAN are trained to recognise a series of 'real' images (i.e. photographs) from 'fake' (computer generated) images. If it cannot distinguish between a 'real' and 'computer generated' image, the 'computer generated' images can then be considered 'realistic'

Misremembered, "Remember imperfectly or incorrectly." Oxford Dictionary. (2019). misremember | Definition of misremember in English by Oxford Dictionaries. Retrieved from https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/misremember
a little too basic lol

Collection, "The action or process of collecting someone or something." Oxford Dictionaries. (2019). collection | Definition of collection in English by Oxford Dictionaries. Retrieved from https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/collection
a little too basic lol

Invercargill, "Invercargill is New Zealand’s southernmost city. Mostly flat, Invercargill stretches over an open plain beside the Waihopai River estuary." New Zealand Gouvernment. (2019). Invercargill | NZHistory, New Zealand history online. Retrieved from https://nzhistory.govt.nz/keyword/invercargill
Focus the invercargill definition on when it was colonised, who colonised it (some europeans probably) and what kind of buildings you are getting your computers to focus on.

• Rationale (summary only) – explanation of why topic is of interest: outlines why you are undertaking the project e.g. what you hope to achieve, will you be making an original contribution of knowledge or elaborating on current research in some unique way?

Having lived in Invercargill for 45 years I have seen a number of changes to the inner city. My conversations with others about the inner city often have been misremembered slightly or turn out to be entirely untrue. By utilising GAN's, my goal is that the misremembered inner city will be manifested in a photo-realistic manner.

• Methodology (summary only) – explanation of proposed methodology employed: methodology e.g. practice-based research etc is explained and its relationship to the methods you are utilizing is outlined.

• Outline of proposed approach to documentation (summary only): explain how you are documenting your project’s journey and why e.g. Discuss blogging as research and how this is relevant to your blogging process.

• Organisation – outlines how research may be organized e.g. summarize your arguments and outline how these will structured in one to two sentences – what is the logical order for your arguments?
